Taking Chances
Where Squirrel Monkeys have survived, save land must be provided. Reforestation with local trees helps create new retreat areas where the animals can find food in a natural way and where the young animals are save from snaring.
The gallery forests will serve as bridges between the different retreat areas. Like the veins connect all the important organs of our body, the Squirrel Monkeys move and exchange with the help of the trees along the rivers.
Following the gallery forests, a network of retreat areas should be established at many different locations. Just one bigger habitat would not help the exchange between the wide spread populations. The decentralized organisation of the network will increase the number of groups of Squirrel Monkeys that benefit from the project, i.e. they will have much better chances to survive. The network of connected forests will fit well into the farmland, and as farming is not affected, the project is even more acceptable for the people.
Aerial views will indicate the gallery forests as dark lines whereas from the ground they appear as green ribbons following the rivers.
