Strategies for survival
Saimiri Wildlife will establish areas that make sure Squirrel monkeys can survive in their natural environment. We want the animals live outside zoological gardens and survive without deep frozen genetic stuff. During the course of a year, an average family clan of 30 individuals needs at least 135ha of forest to find sufficient food and retreat areas for the young. In the narrow gallery forests neither food nor rest areas are available in the quantities needed. In addition, frequent disturbances lead to stress and undermine reproduction.
More areas must be protected! We are continuously striving for more areas along the gallery forest to be protected and afforested. One of the key priorities right now is a group of some 40 Squirrel monkeys that got isolated in the Corregimiento San Carlos, an area of badly damaged and fragmented gallery forest. To ensure the survival of the group, at least 30ha have to be acquired immediately because the existing stock of trees suffers from further damaging.
Afforesting at the gallery forests will ensure the survival of isolated groups of Squirrel monkeys. With your help the above projects can be realized.
